In an interview for the Midwest Music Tribute website (http://www.midwesttribute.com/interviews.html), Johnson had this to say about the sound he is striving for with his music - It’s the stuff I do best...blues, rock and roll, rhythm and blues...that’s the music I like. We’re going to be doing my originals and some covers that folks have never heard...or that they’ve forgotten...or songs that I do different...you know, traditional songs. A look at some of the songs on the set list and his words ring true: Spoonful, In the Wee Wee Hours, Stranger Blues, Sleepwalk, Betty and Dupree, Louisiana Blues, Harlem Nocturne, Jean Pierre, Freddy the Freeloader, Drown in My Own Tears... Add to these covers the James Calvin Johnson originals It Ain't Over, Too Hard to Love You, Unbreakable, Rogue’s Moon, Give It Easy and throw in some Underbeats classics like Route 66 as well.

As great as Jim is on vocals and guitar, his real talent is as a songwriter. Jim's songs have been recorded by legends like Ray Charles, the 5th Dimension and Minnesota's own Gypsy. He has also written a number of songs that have been featured in movies and television programs produced by Universal Studios.
