Roger Green

Born and raised outside of Denver, Colorado, Roger began playing out as a teenager, eventually joining The Czars in1998. With the Czars, Green wrote, recorded, and produced music, including two full-length albums for Bella Union Records – a UK label initiated by former Cocteau Twins members. The Czars toured Europe frequently, landing support slots for larger acts such as 16 Horsepower, David Gray, and The Flaming Lips. Often critically acclaimed, The Czars’ Goodbye made Uncut Magazine’s top 100 albums of 2004. Green left the Czars at the end of 2004 to pursue his own songwriting and to collaborate with trumpeter Ron Miles (Bill Frisell, Jenny Scheinman) in a band devoted to mostly Miles’ compositions. Shortly after leaving the Czars, Roger released What Would This Be For? – a split CD with Porlolo on Public Service Records.

Roger Green’s music blends ambient, sparkling textures with traditional American folksong forms. It can go from a dense sonic wall to a finger-picking song reminiscent of the Carter family. Depending on the performance context, you can hear him play drawn-out instrumentals that explore formal boundaries with multiple loops and effects or just singing and playing guitar. His recordings focus more on his songwriting and have more of a folk-country feel – probably because of the band’s instrumentation. But he usually performs alone.
